Nostalgia....a wistful desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in one's life, to one's home or homeland, or to one's family and friends; a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time (Oxford Dictionary)
Such a simple little object ...a shoe....and yet it has the ability to evoke such emotion in me.....

Voting Eve #220

Daily painting #220. 6"x8" oil on primed canvas panel

As the sun sets in a rainbow of color this evening, I can't help but wonder what tomorrow will bring. Tomorrow our rainbow nation will head off to the polls to vote for South Africa's leaders. I can't comprehend that there was once a time when the right to vote was denied to some and so if you have the right to vote .....I hope you are going to be making your mark tomorrow! I pray that it will be a peaceful day for all South Africans, free from intimidation and violence and I pray that the elected leaders whoever they are will have the leadership, governance and compassion to build our nation. May the sun set on a brighter future for all tomorrow(and yes that sounds all so idealistic but hey let's be positive)...I am off to make my mark....and if you are South African, I hope you are too.....

Garlic bulb #219

Daily painting #219. 5"x7" oil on primed canvas panel

Mondays are chore days.....spent grocery shopping and stocking up for the week and just generally getting organized! Oh and did I tell you a leak in my geyser caused my kitchen ceiling to collapse and my kitchen was flooded......grrrrrr! Anyway at least none of us were standing in the kitchen at the time so I am grateful for small mercies! So my day has involved plumbers, insurance assessments and general chaos rather than organization.....a tip on how NOT to start the week! Can I lock myself in my studio tomorrow please.....

Rose study #218

Daily painting #218. 6"x6" oil on primed canvas panel

A little study on how shadow and light combine to create form. Daily painting is not about creating masterpieces but about practicing and refining your skills as an artist. It allows one to solve problems and tackle challenges ....and certainly tests your discipline after a weekend of painting my heart out!

Prunes on a board #217

Daily painting #217. 5"x7" oil on primed canvas panel

These pretty little prunes look like cherries but are about double the size of a large grape. I have no idea what I am going to do with 7 little fresh prunes but they looked good to paint....

Roses for me #216

Daily painting #216. 6"x8" oil on primed canvas panel

My husband and daughter went off to the shop to buy a few groceries and came home with a bunch of roses for me! I am sure it was Amy's doing but Andrew was so proud of himself and the gesture was really sweet...he would never normally buy me flowers for no reason and I did jokingly ask if he had anything he needed to tell me....to which he responded with a really indignant look on his face! So now I have a beautiful bunch of flowers on my kitchen table....and for a change they weren't bought by me.....thank you Andrew! Very thoughtful indeed.....
